Community Spotlight: Tapestry Health
Meet our June 2026 Community Spotlight organization: Tapestry Health
When was your organization founded and for what purpose was it established?
Founded in 1973, Tapestry Health’s mission is to provide vital, effective, and inclusive community health services that support optimal wellbeing and vibrant communities. Across Western Massachusetts, many residents—especially people of color, LGBTQ individuals, people with low incomes, and people who use drugs—face significant barriers to care due to discrimination, bias, provider distrust, and limited access. These inequities lead to higher rates of preventable health issues and, for most of these groups, higher rates of unplanned pregnancies.
Tapestry focuses on holistic, innovative, community-centered approaches to ensure everyone can safely access the care they need. As a result, nearly all of the clients we serve annually are people with low incomes, people of color, LGBTQ individuals, and/or people who use drugs. Throughout all four counties, we meet people where they are with compassionate, nonjudgmental services—available in English and Spanish—that prevent, detect, and address health concerns while reducing the severity of chronic conditions.
Over five decades, Tapestry has grown into a regional leader in public health, now serving almost 20,000 residents each year through more than 45,000 visits across 14 sites and mobile programs.
How would you describe the impact of the work your organization does?
Tapestry Health provides compassionate, nonjudgmental care to over 26,000 residents annually through 14 sites and mobile services across Western Massachusetts. We serve a diverse population, focusing on individuals with low incomes, the uninsured or underinsured, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people who use drugs.
Because over 86% of our clinic and mobile health patients live below 250% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)—and nearly 60% are below 100% FPL—Tapestry serves as a primary source of healthcare for residents with limited resources. Our mobile health van brings services to people who otherwise could not access care, including individuals experiencing homelessness, rural residents, and those without reliable transportation. In many of these communities, Tapestry is one of the only providers offering free or low-cost harm reduction, reproductive healthcare, and preventive services.
